Steps to take Before the Birth:
1. Call your insurance company and ask for the name and address where you should submit claims for maternity care.
2. Ask if they cover birth doulas, if they say no, ask for an 'exception' or a 'pre-authorization' which is in writing.
3. If you are hiring a doula instead of using an epidural, or are hoping to avoid a c-section, tell them that... and ask how much they pay for these extra procedures... including the longer hospital stay. Write these numbers down.
4. Before birth, ask your care-provider for a prescription for a birth doula. This can be in the form of a letter or written on a prescription pad.
